This is the fifth song of "Winterreise" (Winter Journey), a set of 24 songs that Schubert composed in 1827. The poems are by Wilhelm Müller. A young man whose love has ended travels alone through the snow. When he passes a linden tree by a well near the town gate, he feels as if the tree is calling to him: "Come here, and you will find rest."
In the piano introduction, quick trembling notes suggest rustling leaves and a cold wind. The song begins with a gentle melody like an old folk song, but it later turns to a minor key and becomes stormy when the cold wind blows his hat away. Even so, the young man does not turn back and keeps on traveling.
Schubert sang "Winterreise" to his friends, but they were puzzled by such dark songs. According to memories that his friend Spaun wrote about thirty years later, their friend Schober said he liked only "Der Lindenbaum." Today it is one of Schubert's best-loved songs. In Japan, Kondo Sakufu wrote Japanese words for it in the Meiji era, and it has long been sung with those words.
A young man walks alone in the snow. He is very sad. He passes a linden tree. The tree seems to say, "Come and rest here." But he keeps walking.

In Japanese the tree is called "bodaiju," but the tree in the song is a European linden, a kind of lime tree. It is completely different from the Indian bodhi tree under which the Buddha found enlightenment. In fact, many "bodaiju" trees planted at Japanese temples are also lindens.
In the mid-19th century, the German composer Silcher made a simple choral arrangement of "Der Lindenbaum." It became hugely popular and was sung all over Germany. It is said that many people sang it without knowing who wrote it, thinking it was an old folk song.
At the end of Thomas Mann's novel "The Magic Mountain" (1924), the hero, Hans Castorp, moves across a battlefield while singing "Der Lindenbaum" to himself. In the novel, this song has a very special meaning for him.
It is said that in the autumn of 1828, just before his death, Schubert checked the printer's proofs of Part 2 of "Winterreise" from his sickbed. Part 1, which includes "Der Lindenbaum," was published early in 1828, but Part 2 came out only after he died.
