Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' is a choral movement from Bach's church Cantata No. 147, 'Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life.' A church cantata is a work for voices and instruments written for a church service. This cantata has two parts, and this music appears twice, at the end of each part, with different words.
In 1723 Bach became cantor, the director of church music, at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, and he performed this cantata that July. It was based on a work from his Weimar years, written in 1716, which he greatly expanded into two parts. The hymn tune sung by the choir was written in the 17th century by Johann Schop. Around it, a flowing melody in groups of three notes gently wraps the voices.
The piece became loved around the world in the 20th century. The British pianist Myra Hess published a piano arrangement in 1926, and both the score and her playing became very popular. The English title, 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring,' is now widely known, and the music is a favorite at weddings and at Christmas, played on all kinds of instruments.
This is a song for a choir and instruments. Bach wrote it for a church in 1723. The instruments play a soft, flowing melody. The choir sings a slow and calm song. Today, many people play it at weddings.

In Cantata No. 147, this music appears twice, as movements 6 and 10, with different words. The words of movement 10 mean 'Jesus remains my joy,' and these are the better-known words. Ending both parts with the same music ties the whole work together.
The German words mean something like 'Jesus remains my joy,' but the English title, 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring,' is not a direct translation. It comes from the words of an English hymn by the British poet Robert Bridges. The Japanese title is based on this English title.
Myra Hess, who made this piece popular, is famous for giving lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery in London during the Second World War. The paintings had been moved away for safety, and she brought music to people in the empty museum. Her playing of this piece comforted many listeners.
The hymn tune that the choir sings slowly was published around 1642 by Johann Schop, a musician from before Bach's time. Bach added harmony and wrote the new flowing melody for the instruments around it. The tune most people hum today is actually Bach's instrumental melody.
