Mendelssohn wrote this overture after a trip to the Hebrides, islands off the west coast of Scotland. A short tune in the low strings repeats and spreads out like rolling waves. It is not the opening of an opera but a concert overture, a complete story on its own.
In August 1829, the 20-year-old Mendelssohn toured the islands with his friend Karl Klingemann. On August 7, he wrote the opening tune into a letter to his family, to show how deeply the Hebrides had moved him. Soon after, the two friends visited Fingal's Cave on the island of Staffa, famous for its columns of basalt rock.
He first finished the piece in Rome in 1830, under the title The Lonely Island. After revising it, he had it premiered in London in May 1832. Its way of painting a landscape in sound was greatly admired by later composers, including Wagner. Today it is one of Mendelssohn's best-known works.
Mendelssohn took a boat trip to some islands in Scotland. The sea was rough, and he got seasick! Before he saw the famous cave, he wrote the first tune in a letter. Later, he made it into this music. You can hear the waves moving up and down.

The famous opening tune already appears in his letter of August 7, 1829. It is thought that he had not yet visited Fingal's Cave when he wrote it. So the music may have come from the island seascape in general rather than the cave itself.
According to his travel partner Klingemann, Mendelssohn was terribly seasick on the boat trip. Klingemann joked that Mendelssohn got along with the sea much better as a musician than as a person with a stomach.
When he finished it in Rome in 1830, he called it Die einsame Insel, The Lonely Island. After several revisions, it became known as The Hebrides or Fingal's Cave. In Japan, it is best known as Fingal's Cave.
Fingal, the name of the cave, is a hero from Scottish and Irish legend. He became famous across Europe through the Ossian poems published in the 18th century, which inspired many Romantic artists.
