Mendelssohn wrote this symphony inspired by his travels in Italy. In the first movement, the violins burst out with a sunny melody over quick, repeated notes. The last of its four movements is a saltarello, a fast Italian dance, with touches of another dance, the tarantella. It sounds like the joy of travel turned into music.
In 1830 and 1831, Mendelssohn traveled through Italy and was deeply moved by the scenery of Rome and Naples, by festivals, and by daily life. He began the symphony during the trip and finished it in 1833. He was also a talented painter and made many sketches and watercolors on his travels.
It was first performed in London in May 1833 at a Philharmonic Society concert, conducted by Mendelssohn himself, and it was a success. But he was not satisfied and kept revising it, so it was never published in his lifetime. It came out in 1851, after his death, which is why it is called No. 4.
Mendelssohn took a long trip to Italy. He loved the sun, the people and the festivals. Then he wrote this happy symphony. It begins like a bright sunny morning. The last part is a very fast Italian dance.

The symphony begins in bright A major, but the finale is in A minor and ends in the minor key. Symphonies that start in major and end in minor are very rare. The finale feels less cheerful than feverish and wild.
Even though the premiere went well, Mendelssohn was not satisfied and kept making changes. He never published it, and it appeared in 1851, four years after his death. Today it is one of his most popular symphonies.
In a letter to his family from Rome, Mendelssohn is reported to have said that this symphony would be the jolliest piece he had ever written. The excitement of his trip seems to pour straight into the music.
Mendelssohn was gifted not only in music but also in art. He drew and painted many landscapes and watercolors on his travels, including views of Italy and Switzerland. This symphony is like a travel painting made of sound.
