The 'Venetian Boat Song' is the sixth piece in Book 1 of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words for piano. It pictures a gondola gliding along the canals of Venice and the song of its boatman. A gentle, slightly sad melody in G minor floats above a rocking accompaniment. Its title is thought to be one of the few in the collection that Mendelssohn gave himself.
In 1830, Mendelssohn, then just over twenty, set off on a long journey and visited Venice in Italy. Book 1 of the Songs without Words was put together around this time. A 'song without words' is a song with no lyrics: the pianist's right hand sings the melody like a singer, while the left hand plays the accompaniment. The gentle rhythm in 6/8 time feels like a boat rocking on the waves.
Book 1 was published in London in 1832 under the title Original Melodies for the Pianoforte. In the end, the Songs without Words grew to eight books with 48 pieces, and they became hugely popular on home pianos in the 19th century. Mendelssohn later wrote two more 'Venetian Boat Songs', so there are three in all.
This piano piece is a song with no words. It is about a boat in Venice, Italy. The music moves slowly, like a boat on the water. The melody is a little sad and very beautiful. Mendelssohn gave it this name himself.

In 1828, Fanny wrote in a letter that Felix had given her a 'song without words' for her album. Fanny also wrote many similar singing piano pieces, so some historians think she may have helped inspire the idea.
In 1842, when a young man asked what the Songs without Words meant, Mendelssohn replied in a letter that what music expresses is not too vague to put into words, but rather too definite. It explains why he gave so few of them titles.
Besides this piece in Book 1, there is one more 'Venetian Boat Song' in Book 2 and another in Book 5. All three are in minor keys and sing over a rocking accompaniment. Listen to all three, and you can almost see the Venetian nights Mendelssohn remembered.
Some Songs without Words have famous titles like 'Spring Song' or 'Spinning Song', but most were added later by publishers and others. Only a handful of titles, including the three 'Venetian Boat Songs', are thought to come from Mendelssohn himself.
