The 'Reformation' Symphony is a symphony Mendelssohn wrote around the age of twenty, from late 1829 to 1830. Its subject is the Protestant Reformation, the movement started by Martin Luther in the 16th century that changed the Christian church forever. It has four movements. It begins with a solemn introduction and ends with a mighty hymn.
In 1530, the Lutherans presented the Augsburg Confession, a statement of their faith, to the emperor. In 1830, its 300th anniversary was celebrated in Germany, and Mendelssohn hoped his new symphony would be played at the festivities. He finished the score in May 1830, but it was not performed at the celebrations. The first movement quotes a short church melody called the 'Dresden Amen', and the finale is built on Luther's hymn 'A Mighty Fortress Is Our God'.
Later, an orchestra in Paris also turned it down as 'too learned'. The first performance finally took place in Berlin on 15 November 1832, with Mendelssohn conducting. In time, however, he came to see it as an immature work of his youth and never performed it again. It was published in 1868, 21 years after his death. That is why it is called 'No. 5', even though it was the second of his five numbered symphonies to be written.
This symphony is about a big change in church history. Mendelssohn wrote it for a big 300-year celebration. But the music was not played at the party. At the end, you can hear a famous church song by Martin Luther.

The symphony was published in 1868, after Mendelssohn's death. Because the numbers follow the order of publication, it became 'No. 5'. But in order of writing, it was the second of the five numbered symphonies, older than the famous 'Italian' (No. 4) and 'Scottish' (No. 3).
In 1832, the Paris orchestra of the famous conductor Habeneck refused to perform the symphony, calling it 'too learned'. It probably seemed too full of complex, overlapping lines. Some scholars also think it may have sounded too Protestant for Catholic Paris.
The 'Dresden Amen', played softly by the strings in the first movement's introduction, was a short 'Amen' sung in churches in Dresden. Later, Wagner used the same melody as an important theme, the Grail motif, in his last opera, Parsifal. Bruckner also used it in his symphonies.
Mendelssohn's grandfather was the famous Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix and his brother and sisters were baptized as Protestant Christians in 1816. Their parents converted in 1822 and formally added the family name 'Bartholdy'. The Lutheran faith was important to Felix.
