Chopin wrote this piano piece in 1842 and published it in 1843. A polonaise is a proud Polish dance in three beats, once danced at royal courts. This one is called the "Heroic" Polonaise. With its power and brilliance, it is one of Chopin's most famous works. Chopin himself did not give it this nickname.
Chopin left Poland at the age of 20 and never went back. A Polish uprising that began in 1830 was crushed by Russia, and he stayed in Paris for the rest of his life. He wrote this piece at Nohant, the country home of George Sand. Many people feel it is full of love for his faraway homeland.
After a rising introduction, the grand main theme begins. In the middle, the left hand repeats octaves like galloping horses while the right hand sings boldly. Today pianists all over the world play this piece as a brilliant finale for their recitals. The key is to play it with both power and dignity.
This is a big, strong piano piece. A polonaise is a dance from Poland. Chopin was from Poland, but he lived in Paris. He loved his country very much. In the middle, the left hand sounds like running horses.

In the middle section, the left hand plays four falling notes in octaves, over and over. It must stay loud and fast, so this part is famous for tiring the hand. To listeners, it sounds like the hooves of horses coming closer.
Chopin's first published piece was a polonaise he wrote at the age of seven. It was printed in Warsaw in 1817, and people talked about the young genius. The polonaise stayed important to him from childhood to the end of his life.
Chopin did not choose the nickname. One idea is that it comes from a letter in which George Sand praised the piece as "heroic," but this is not certain. Somehow the name spread all over the world.
In 1831, on his way to Paris, Chopin heard that Warsaw had fallen to the Russian army, and he was deeply upset. He never returned to Poland and died in Paris in 1849. Only his heart was taken back to Warsaw by his sister.
