This is the second of the Two Nocturnes, Op. 27, which Chopin wrote around 1835. The left hand repeats a soft, wide accompaniment, and above it the right hand sings a long, sweet melody. It is loved as one of the most romantic and beautiful of Chopin's nocturnes.
Chopin loved Italian opera, especially the long, beautiful melodies of Bellini. The melody of this piece also sounds like an opera singer. Each time the same melody returns, its small ornaments become more and more brilliant, just as a singer would add decorations on the spot.
Op. 27 was published in 1836 and dedicated to Countess Thérèse d'Apponyi. The first piece is dark and stormy in C-sharp minor, and the second is sweet and calm in D-flat major, a pair of contrasting pieces. It is still often played in concerts and is one of Chopin's most popular nocturnes.
This piano piece is very sweet and romantic. The right hand sings like an opera singer. The same melody comes back many times. Each time, it has more pretty notes. Chopin loved Italian opera.

Chopin was a friend of the Italian opera composer Bellini and deeply loved his long, beautiful melodies. The right hand in this piece is just like a singer's aria. Chopin is said to have taught his students that singing on the piano was very important.
The opening melody comes back several times, and each time more small ornamental notes are added, so it grows more and more brilliant. Chopin recreates on the piano the art of opera singers, who freely decorate a song the second and third time they sing it.
The first piece of Op. 27 is in C-sharp minor, and the second is in D-flat major. Their names are different, but C-sharp and D-flat are the same key on the piano. From a dark minor-key night to a sweet major-key night built on the same note: listen to both and you will hear Chopin's clever plan.
Op. 27 was dedicated to Countess d'Apponyi. Chopin played in the salons of Paris high society and was loved by the nobility. Many pieces like this one were best suited not to big halls but to small rooms lit by candles.
