The Story

The Farewell Waltz is a piano waltz that Chopin wrote in 1835. A sighing melody flows over a slow three-beat rhythm. It is less a waltz for dancing than a quiet piece that seems to speak softly of a memory. The nickname 'Farewell' comes from a story of young love connected with it.

In the autumn of 1835, in Dresden, Germany, Chopin met Maria Wodzińska again. He had known her family since his days in Poland, and he fell in love with her. When he left Dresden, he is said to have given her the music of this waltz. The next year they were secretly engaged, but Maria's family worried about Chopin's health, and the engagement came to nothing.

Chopin never published this piece while he was alive. After his death, his friend Julian Fontana published it in 1855 as Op. 69 No. 1, one of the works Chopin left behind. Together with its sad love story, it is now one of Chopin's most popular waltzes.

Chopin wrote this waltz in 1835. He was in love with a girl named Maria. He gave her this music when he left Dresden. Later, they could not marry. The music is sweet and a little sad.

In 1835, after meeting Maria Wodzińska again in Dresden, Chopin is said to have given her the music of this waltz before he left the town. Because of this story, the piece came to be called the Farewell Waltz.

After the engagement ended, Chopin tied together the letters from Maria and her family and wrote on them in Polish 'Moja bieda', meaning 'my sorrow'. The bundle is said to have been found after his death.

Chopin is said to have wished that his unpublished music be destroyed. But his family and his friend Fontana chose to publish it. Thanks to them, we can hear the Farewell Waltz and the Fantaisie-Impromptu today.

Several copies of this waltz in Chopin's hand are known, and they differ from the published edition in small notes and ornaments. So depending on which score a pianist uses, the performance can sound slightly different.
