The Barcarolle is a piano piece Chopin wrote in 1845 and 1846. A barcarolle is the kind of song sung by gondoliers rowing their boats in Venice, Italy. The left hand keeps a slow, rocking rhythm like waves, and above it the right hand plays a sweet melody that sounds like two people singing. It is one of the greatest works of Chopin's last years.
At this time, Chopin was in poor health, and his relationship with the writer George Sand, whom he had lived with for years, was starting to break down. Even so, this piece is full of bold changes of harmony and dreamy sounds inside its rocking rhythm. It is much grander than an ordinary boat song, and it builds to a big climax near the end.
It was published in 1846 and dedicated to Baroness Stockhausen. The Barcarolle was also played at Chopin's last concert in Paris, in February 1848. It is called one of Chopin's finest works, and many pianists still play it with special feeling.
This piano piece is a boat song. In Venice, boatmen sing songs on their gondolas. The left hand rocks like a boat on the water. The right hand sings a sweet melody. Chopin never went to Venice!

A barcarolle is a song of the Venetian gondolas, but Chopin never traveled to Italy. Without ever seeing the real city of water, he painted the rocking water and the evening air with only his imagination and his music.
On February 16, 1848, Chopin gave a concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. It turned out to be his last concert in Paris, and the Barcarolle was one of the pieces he played. Chopin died the next year, in October 1849.
Much of the right-hand melody is played in two notes at once, a third or a sixth apart, which blend beautifully. It sounds like two lovers singing a duet. This singing style of piano writing is typical of Chopin, who loved opera.
The Barcarolle is written in 12/8 time, a meter that easily creates a rocking feeling. Each bar has four big waves, and each wave splits into three smaller ones, a double kind of swaying. The left hand making waves all the time is another secret that makes you feel you are in a boat.
