The Story

This is the second of the three nocturnes in Op. 15, and it is admired for its richly ornamented melody. It is marked Larghetto, rather slow. The left hand keeps a calm, steady accompaniment, like quiet walking. Above it, the right hand whispers a melody covered with delicate ornaments.

The middle part is marked doppio movimento, which means twice as fast. Suddenly the music becomes quick and dance-like, and the left hand makes big jumps. The key is F-sharp major, which has six sharps. So this part uses many of the piano's black keys.

At the end, the first melody returns, but the section that had 24 bars is now only 14, and the ornaments become even more beautiful. Finally, a broken chord floats down and fades away. Op. 15 was published in January 1834 and dedicated to Chopin's friend Hiller. Pianists still love this piece, and it is often played in concerts.

This nocturne is soft and slow. The melody has many small, shiny notes. In the middle, the music goes two times faster. Then the slow song comes back, but it is shorter. It is the second of three pieces in a set.

Doppio movimento in the middle part is Italian for double movement, which means twice as fast as before. The music jumps from a slow song to something like a scherzo, a fast and playful piece, so first-time listeners are often surprised.

The first melody is 24 bars long, but when it returns at the end, it is only 14 bars. Instead of repeating the same song, Chopin shortens it and changes the ornaments, so listeners never get bored. It shows how skillful he was as a composer.

Theodor Kullak, a 19th-century German pianist and teacher, wrote that the return of the opening melody touches you like a blessing. Because it comes after the lively middle part, the returning song sounds even gentler.

In the fast middle part, the left hand leaps back and forth between low and high notes. The speed has doubled, and the hand must also travel far across the keyboard, so this passage is much harder for pianists than it looks.
