This is the first piece in Chopin's Twelve Études, Op. 25. Both hands keep playing light broken chords like ripples, and from them a melody, played by the little-finger side of the right hand, gently rises. An Aeolian harp is a strange harp whose strings sound by themselves when the wind blows.
In 1836, the German composer Robert Schumann heard Chopin himself play several of the Op. 25 études in Leipzig. Later, in a music magazine, Schumann compared his playing to an Aeolian harp that had all the scales, and praised this first étude as 'a poem rather than an étude'. The nickname Aeolian Harp is said to come from these words.
The Op. 25 set was published in 1837 and dedicated to Countess Marie d'Agoult, Liszt's partner. The hard part is to move the fingers quickly while letting only the melody sing clearly. It is not about power but about controlling tone color, and many pianists still love it.
This piano piece sounds like the wind. Many soft notes move like little waves. A sweet melody sings on top. An Aeolian harp is a harp that the wind plays. People say the name came later, from words by another composer.

Chopin did not name it the Aeolian Harp. The name is said to have spread after Schumann heard Chopin play études from Op. 25 and wrote in a magazine that his playing was like an Aeolian harp with all the scales. Schumann was also the man who introduced Chopin with the words 'Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!'
Chopin is said to have told a student to imagine a little shepherd boy who hides from a storm in a cave and plays his flute while listening to the wind and rain far away. So the piece is also called the Shepherd Boy.
Yes! The Aeolian harp is named after Aeolus, the god of the winds in Greek myths. When you put it by a window, the wind makes its strings shake and play strange chords. It was popular in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries as a romantic instrument.
The melody is played mostly with the little-finger side of the right hand. Playing it louder than the soft notes around it, and making it sing, with the weakest finger is very hard. This étude is more about balancing sounds than about moving fast.
