The Story

The mazurka is a dance in three beats that was born in the Polish countryside. Chopin wrote about 60 mazurkas in his life and filled them with love for his homeland. This A minor mazurka is slow, lonely and mysterious, and it is known as one of his deepest early works.

The piece begins with hazy chords that do not tell you what key you are in. Then a lonely melody full of ornaments appears and sways as it sings. In the middle, it brightens a little, but the lonely song returns. At the end, the same unclear chords come back, and the music simply floats away.

The four mazurkas of Op. 17 were published in 1834 and dedicated to Lina Freppa, a singer of Italian origin. Chopin loved the way opera singers sang, and the melody of this mazurka is full of song-like ornaments. Many pianists love it as one of Chopin's most haunting mazurkas.
