The Story

This waltz was written around 1832–1833, not long after Chopin moved to Paris. It is a bright, lively piece in G-flat major, full of spinning figures and a lightly bouncing rhythm. It is short and one of the lightest of Chopin's waltzes, full of a feeling that makes you want to dance.

Chopin did not publish this piece in his lifetime. In 1855, after his death, his friend Fontana published it as the first piece of Op. 70. The three pieces of Op. 70 were written at different times: the first around 1832–33, the second in 1842, and the third in 1829. The key is G-flat major, which has six flats and uses many black keys.

In the 20th century, this waltz found new life on the ballet stage. It is used in the ballet Les Sylphides, which was made from Chopin's piano pieces arranged for orchestra. It was first meant for listening on the piano, but its lightness is beautifully used in scenes where air spirits dance.

This waltz is short, bright, and light. The notes spin and jump. Chopin did not publish it. His friend published it after he died. Later, dancers danced to it in a ballet called Les Sylphides.

Les Sylphides, a ballet made from Chopin's piano pieces arranged for orchestra, became famous after it was performed in Paris in 1909. This waltz is used in a scene where one dancer dances alone. A small piano piece became the music of a floating air spirit.

The three pieces of Op. 70 were written at different times: the first around 1832–33, the second in 1842, and the third in 1829. Because Chopin's friend Fontana gathered them from the scores left after his death and published them together, they ended up in this combination.

G-flat major is a key with six flats. The score looks hard, but because it uses many black keys, some pianists find that it fits the shape of the hand comfortably. His famous Black Key Étude is also written in G-flat major.

Chopin arrived in Paris in the autumn of 1831. This waltz was written soon after, around 1832–33. It seems to carry the bright, bouncy mood of the time when he was starting to shine in salons and concerts in his new city.
