The Story

This is the first piece in Op. 55, a set of two nocturnes. It is in F minor. The left hand keeps a heavy, steady beat, and above it the right hand sings a simple, heartfelt melody. The melody is not heavily ornamented and feels like someone talking to you, as if you were hearing a friend's quiet confession.

The middle part is marked più mosso, faster, and groups of three notes flow along as the music grows a little stormy. Then the first song returns, now decorated with three-note figures and repeated with variations. Finally the key changes to F major, and the piece closes quietly with hymn-like chords.

Op. 55 was written between 1842 and 1844 and published in August 1844. It was dedicated to Jane Stirling, a pupil from Scotland. She deeply admired Chopin and supported him in his last years, for example by arranging his 1848 concert tour of England and Scotland. This simple, touching piece is still played by many people today.

This nocturne is quiet and simple. The melody sounds like a person telling a secret. Chopin gave it to Jane Stirling, his student from Scotland. She helped Chopin a lot when he was sick.
