The Story

This is the first piece in Op. 37, a set of two nocturnes. It is marked Andante sostenuto, at a walking pace with sustained notes. In G minor, the right hand sings a slightly lonely melody, carefully, step by step. It is said to be one of the simpler and clearer of Chopin's nocturnes.

In the middle, the key changes to E-flat major, and quiet chords move slowly in both hands. This part is very much like a chorale, a hymn sung in church. Maurycy Karasowski, who wrote a biography of Chopin, said this section has a church-like atmosphere. It is as if a time of prayer were placed between two sad songs.

At the end, the sad melody returns, and the piece closes on a bright major chord. Op. 37 was published in 1840. Most of Chopin's works were dedicated to someone, but unusually, the two pieces of Op. 37 have no dedication. Because it is slow and not too hard to play, it is also popular with piano students today.

This nocturne is slow and a little sad. In the middle, we hear soft chords. They sound like a church song or a prayer. Then the sad song comes back. Chopin did not dedicate this music to anyone.

Chopin dedicated most of his published works to pupils, friends, or noble ladies. But the two pieces of Op. 37 have no dedication. This is unusual for Chopin's works, and no one knows for sure why he left them without one.

Chopin's pupil Adolphe Gutmann reportedly said that Chopin forgot to mark a faster tempo for the chorale in the middle. Because of this, he said, the section was often played too slowly. Whether this is true is still debated today.

In the middle section, the music is not split into melody and accompaniment. Instead, all the notes move together as chords. This is very similar to writing for a church organ or choir. With one piano, Chopin creates the sound of a prayer echoing under a high church ceiling.

The second piece of Op. 37 is a bright nocturne in G major. It has a rocking rhythm and is said to feel like a barcarolle, a song sung on a boat. Built on the same note G, one in minor and one in major, the two pieces show completely different faces.
