The Story

The Fantaisie in F minor is a large piano piece in one long movement, written by Chopin in 1841. A fantasy is a piece that is not tied to a fixed form, and its scenes change freely. It begins like a slow march, then moves through fiery, passionate music and a quiet, prayer-like section, as if telling a story.

In the summer of 1841, Chopin was staying at George Sand's country house in Nohant, in central France. He wrote a great deal during this time, and in the same year he also finished his Ballade No. 3 and the Nocturnes, Op. 48. The Fantaisie comes from the time when Chopin was at the height of his powers.

It was published in 1841 and dedicated to Princess Catherine de Souzzo. It starts in F minor but ends in A-flat major, an unusual journey between keys. Along with Schumann's Fantasie, it is considered one of the great fantasies of the Romantic era.

This long piano piece is like a story. It starts like a slow, quiet march. Then the music becomes wild and strong. In the middle, there is a calm part like a prayer. It starts in a dark key and ends in a bright key.

Most classical pieces end in the key they started in. But this Fantaisie starts in dark F minor and ends in bright A-flat major. These two keys are 'relatives' that share the same key signature, four flats. This change can sound like a journey from darkness to light.

The opening is a slow, march-like section in the low notes. If you expect a dreamy fantasy, this start may surprise you. The quiet march slowly grows and leads into the passionate main part.

After the passionate parts, the tempo suddenly slows, and a quiet chorale, hymn-like chords in B major, appears. It feels as if time stops in the middle of a storm. After this, the music becomes intense again.

In the 1840s, Chopin spent many summers at George Sand's house in Nohant. In 1841 alone, he wrote this Fantaisie as well as the Ballade No. 3, the Polonaise Op. 44, and the Nocturnes Op. 48. The quiet country house was an important place for his composing.
