Chopin wrote and published this piano piece in 1837. It is the second of his four scherzos. "Scherzo" means "joke" in Italian. In Classical-period symphonies and sonatas, the scherzo became a quick movement that often replaced the minuet. But Chopin turned it into a large, passionate piece that stands on its own.
The piece opens with a quiet question of three soft notes, whispered in the dark. Big chords then answer like an explosion. After that, a beautiful, flowing melody appears, and the middle section turns quiet and thoughtful. These strong contrasts are what make the piece so exciting. It shows Chopin's dramatic side very clearly.
Schumann wrote that this piece was so full of tenderness and boldness, love and scorn, that it could be compared to a poem by Lord Byron. Today it is one of Chopin's most popular works, often played at competitions and recitals. The piece ends brilliantly in bright D-flat major.
This piano piece starts with a soft question. Then loud chords answer. "Scherzo" means "joke" in Italian. But this music is not a joke. It is strong and full of feeling.

"Scherzo" means "joke," and in Beethoven's symphonies it often became a fast, lively movement in place of the minuet. But all four of Chopin's scherzos are large, intense and dramatic. The gap between the name and the music is huge.
According to Wilhelm von Lenz, who studied with Chopin, Chopin wanted the soft opening notes to sound like a question, and he was hard to satisfy. The story is often told to show how particular Chopin was.
Schumann wrote that this piece mixes tenderness and boldness, love and scorn, so that it can be compared to a poem by the English poet Byron. At that time, Byron was a symbol of passionate Romanticism.
This piece was dedicated to Countess Adèle de Fürstenstein, one of Chopin's students. Chopin dedicated many works to the noble students he taught in Paris.
