The Story

Scherzo No. 3 is the third of Chopin's four scherzos. After a mysterious introduction, a fierce theme begins, with both hands thundering in octaves, the same note played high and low together. It is often called one of Chopin's most powerful and forceful piano pieces.

The piece is thought to have been worked on during Chopin's winter on Majorca in 1838–39 and finished at Nohant in the summer of 1839. In the middle section, slow, hymn-like chords called a chorale alternate with sparkling notes that fall from high above. The contrast between the fierce octaves and this quiet, prayer-like music is the heart of the piece.

The piece was published in 1840 and dedicated to Adolphe Gutmann, one of Chopin's favorite students. Gutmann is said to have had large, strong hands. At the end, the music speeds up and closes powerfully with fierce octaves and chords. Pianists need the skill to play octaves fast and with power.

This piano piece is strong and exciting. Both hands play loud octaves together. In the middle, there is slow music like a church song. Small notes fall like snow between the chords. The composer gave it to his student.

Wilhelm von Lenz, who also studied with Chopin, reported that Gutmann's fist could knock a hole in a table. But this is only Lenz's story, and some scholars doubt it.

Chopin started this piece during the winter he spent on Majorca with George Sand. Although he fell ill, he finished the 24 Preludes there and also began this scherzo. Even in that hard winter, his creative power did not fade.

In the hymn-like middle section, after each phrase of chords, a shower of fine notes falls from high above. This happens again and again, like snow or drops of light falling. It is one of the most beautiful moments in the piece.

Gutmann was one of Chopin's favorite students, and it is said that other students were jealous of him. He is also named as one of the people who were with Chopin near the end of his life.
