The Story

This waltz is thought to date from around 1830, the year Chopin left Warsaw. It is a passionate piece in E minor. After a short introduction, a fast, spinning waltz begins. In the middle, it changes to a calm part in E major. Then the fiery music returns, and the piece ends with a brilliant finish full of racing fingers.

In November 1830, Chopin left Warsaw for Vienna. After this departure, he never returned to his homeland. This waltz is also thought to date from around 1830, near the time of that departure, although its exact date is unknown. It feels as if it is packed with the burning passion of a young Polish genius.

Chopin did not publish this piece. It was first published in 1868, after his death. It has no opus number and is called Waltz No. 14. No copy in Chopin's own handwriting survives. Even so, because of its passionate charm, it is one of the most popular of his posthumously published waltzes and is often played in concerts and recitals.

This waltz is thought to be an early work by Chopin. It is fast and exciting. In the middle, it becomes calm for a while. It probably comes from around 1830. That year, Chopin left Poland and never went back home.

Chopin died in 1849, and this waltz was published in 1868, nineteen years later. It was published without an opus number, and today it is identified by catalog numbers such as B. 56 and KK IVa/15. Even so, it is now one of the popular waltzes by Chopin.

In this piece, fiery parts in E minor and calm parts in E major take turns. Since both keys are built on the same note E, it is like seeing the angry face and the smiling face of the same person. This switching gives the piece strong contrast.
