A polonaise is a dance in three beats that Polish nobles danced as if marching proudly. No. 5 is one of Chopin's darkest, fiercest and largest polonaises. It begins with a low rumble, and a powerful theme thunders out heavily. It is often heard as an expression of Chopin's feelings for his homeland, Poland.
The biggest surprise is that the middle section is a mazurka, another Polish dance. Putting a different dance inside a polonaise was very unusual. Just before it, there is an eerie passage in which the same low note is hammered dozens of times.
In August 1841, Chopin wrote to a publisher in Vienna that this piece was a kind of fantasy in the form of a polonaise. It was published that year and dedicated to Princess de Beauvau. Its mix of polonaise and fantasy can be seen as a step toward his Polonaise-Fantaisie of 1846.
A polonaise is a Polish dance. This one is dark and very strong. In the middle, there is a different dance, a mazurka! The composer called it a kind of fantasy. It was a new idea.

In the middle is a gentle section marked in mazurka tempo. The polonaise and the mazurka are both great Polish dances. Chopin brought his homeland's two dances together in a single piece.
Before the mazurka, there is a passage where the same octave note is struck more than 30 times. It sounds like a drum that will not stop, filling listeners with tension. It is a very bold idea.
In a letter of August 1841, Chopin told his publisher that the piece was a kind of fantasy in polonaise form, but that he would call it a polonaise. Chopin himself felt it was no ordinary polonaise.
Mixing the polonaise with the free fantasy reached full bloom a few years later in the Polonaise-Fantaisie of 1846. This No. 5 can be seen as an experimental step on the way there.
