The Story

This is the first piece in Op. 9, the first set of nocturnes Chopin published. A nocturne means a night piece, a singing piano piece that feels like being lost in thought on a quiet night. The left hand plays a wide, gentle accompaniment, and the right hand sings a thoughtful melody. It comes right before the famous No. 2.

The Irish pianist John Field pioneered the piano nocturne. Chopin took up the form and made it far richer. In this piece, the right-hand melody is decorated with long, flowing runs of small notes that don't fit neatly into the beats of the accompaniment, so it sounds as if someone is singing freely.

Op. 9 was published in 1832 and 1833 and dedicated to Marie Pleyel, of the Pleyel family famous for making pianos. Chopin wrote 21 nocturnes in all and became the composer most connected with the nocturne. No. 1 is not as famous as No. 2, but many fans love its slightly shadowy beauty.

A nocturne is a piece for the night. This is the first piece in Chopin's first nocturne book. The melody is quiet and a little sad. It sounds like someone talking alone under the moon. The famous Nocturne No. 2 comes right after it.

Op. 9 No. 2 is one of Chopin's most famous nocturnes. This No. 1 is often hidden in its shadow, but it is the piece that opens the set. If you listen from the darker B-flat minor of No. 1 to the brighter E-flat major of No. 2, you can feel the night air change.

The first piano nocturnes were written by John Field from Ireland. Chopin knew Field's music well and took over the form. Then, with bolder harmonies and singing ornaments, he raised the nocturne so high that it became almost another name for Chopin.

The right-hand melody has groups of many small notes that don't fit exactly into the beats of the accompaniment. Instead of playing them mechanically, the pianist must shape them freely, like a singer. This is a very Chopin-like way of writing.

Op. 9 was dedicated to Marie, the wife of Camille Pleyel of the Pleyel piano company, and a fine pianist herself. Chopin loved Pleyel pianos, and he gave his first Paris concert in the Pleyel hall.
