This is a sonata in four movements that Chopin wrote for cello and piano. Almost all of Chopin's works are for solo piano, but the cello was an instrument he liked. The cello and piano talk to each other as equals, through a powerful first movement, a lively scherzo, a short and beautiful largo, and a passionate finale.
Chopin worked on this piece through 1845 and 1846, and he struggled with it a great deal. Many sketches survive, showing that he rewrote it again and again. It was dedicated to his close friend in Paris, the cellist Auguste Franchomme. Chopin and Franchomme had earlier written a Grand Duo for cello and piano together.
It was published in 1847, and it became the last work Chopin published in his lifetime. In February 1848, at his last concert in Paris, Chopin and Franchomme played it together. It is said that they played only some of the movements, not all. Today it is an essential piece for cellists.
Chopin wrote almost all of his music for piano. But this piece is for cello and piano. He wrote it for his good friend, a cellist. It was very hard for him to write. They played its last three parts together at his last concert in Paris.

This cello sonata was the last work published while Chopin was alive. It came out in 1847, and Chopin died two years later, in 1849. It is surprising that the last work the poet of the piano sent into the world was not a piano solo but a piece with cello.
Chopin struggled to write this piece, and many sketches survive. In a letter to his family, he is said to have written that he was sometimes happy with the sonata and sometimes not, and that he would throw it into a corner and then pick it up again.
The cellist Franchomme was one of Chopin's closest friends in Paris. Earlier, the two had written a Grand Duo together, based on melodies from an opera. This sonata grew out of their long friendship.
At Chopin's last concert in Paris, at the Salle Pleyel on February 16, 1848, he played this sonata with Franchomme. It is said that the first movement was left out and only the other movements were played.
