The Story

This is the fourth piece in Chopin's 12 Études, Op. 10, which he wrote around the age of 20. An étude is a piece for practicing technique. Chopin, however, turned these exercises into works of art beautiful enough for the concert hall. No. 4 is very fast and fierce.

The key idea is that both hands take turns with the fast running notes. While one hand runs, the other marks the rhythm with strong accents. Near the end, Chopin wrote con più fuoco possibile, which means with as much fire as possible, and the music grows even wilder.

Op. 10 was published in 1833 and dedicated to Chopin's friend, the pianist Franz Liszt. That year, Chopin wrote to a friend that Liszt was playing his études at that very moment, and that he wished he could steal Liszt's way of playing them. Today pianists still use this piece to build their skills.

This piano piece is very fast. The right hand and the left hand take turns. One hand runs, and the other hand helps. Near the end, the music says, "Play with as much fire as possible!" The composer gave these pieces to his friend Liszt.

The Op. 10 Études were dedicated to Liszt, a pianist of about the same age whom Chopin met in Paris. Liszt was a superstar famous for his amazing technique, and Chopin gave him a set full of difficult challenges.

In 1833 Chopin wrote to his friend Ferdinand Hiller that Liszt was playing his études at that moment, and that he wished he could steal Liszt's way of playing them. Even the composer envied that performance.

The piece just before it, No. 3, is the slow and beautiful étude known in Japan as Wakare no Kyoku, or Farewell. Right after that gentle piece, this stormy No. 4 begins. Heard together, the contrast is amazing.

Chopin already asks for fire, but near the end he goes further and writes with as much fire as possible. He was careful with his markings, and he even wrote down how far to push the speed and power.
