The Story

This is the first piece in Op. 32, a set of two nocturnes. It is marked Andante sostenuto, at a walking pace with sustained notes. In bright B major, the right hand sings a gentle melody, as if it were speaking to you. Again and again, the music slows down a little, stops, and then starts walking again.

The whole piece is short, only about 65 bars, and for most of its length it stays calm, beautiful, and dreamlike. But in the final part, the mood changes completely. Low notes rumble like drums, and music like an opera recitative, a speech-like song, appears as if a character were crying out.

Unusually for a nocturne, this piece ends in dark B minor. However, some editions end it with a B major chord, and some pianists, such as the great Arthur Rubinstein, have ended it in major. Op. 32 was published in 1837 and dedicated to Baroness Camille de Billing.

This nocturne is sweet and calm for a long time. It sounds like a happy dream. But near the end, the music suddenly changes. Low notes sound like drums, and the piece ends in a sad, dark way. What a surprise!

The pianist and writer David Dubal wrote that the ending of this piece completely shocks the listener out of a dream. A piece that has been calm all along suddenly turns, in its last few bars, into something like a tragic opera scene. It is a very bold idea.

The piece starts in bright B major, but ends in dark B minor. It is common to end a minor piece brightly in major, but the opposite is very rare. However, the final chord differs among the sources, and some editions give a B major chord. As a result, pianists do not all end the piece in the same way.

In this piece, the music often slows down and pauses, then returns to the first speed in the next bar. It is like someone who stops to think in the middle of talking, then starts again. How to show these pauses is where a pianist's skill really shows.

The music at the end is very much like an opera recitative. A recitative is a part where a singer seems to speak the words rather than sing a melody. Chopin loved Italian opera and brought its way of expression into his piano music.
