Chopin Etude Op.25 No.12 'Ocean' - Paul Barton, Feurich 218 Grand Piano

This is the twelfth and final piece of Chopin's Twelve Études, Op. 25. Both hands together sweep up and down the keyboard in huge broken chords. Because it sounds like waves, it is called the Ocean in English and in Japan, but Chopin did not give it this name.
From the rolling waves of sound, a heavy melody can be heard. The pianist must keep both hands stretched wide and play powerfully without a break, so it takes stamina and focus. If the first étude of the set, the Aeolian Harp, is a gentle breeze, this one is a stormy ocean. The first and last pieces of the set make a wonderful contrast.
Both sets of études, Op. 10 and Op. 25, end with a piece in C minor. The last of Op. 10 is the Revolutionary Étude. This piece rushes on wildly but finishes proudly on a bright C major chord, closing all 24 études. It is still a very popular piece for showing powerful playing.
This piano piece sounds like a big sea in a storm. Both hands go up and down the keyboard. The sound is very loud and strong. At the end, the music becomes bright. It is the last piece in the set.

The name Ocean was given later, because the music sounds like rolling waves. Chopin did not give titles like this to any of his études. Revolutionary, Black Keys, Winter Wind, and the others are all nicknames added later.
Op. 10 ends with the Revolutionary Étude, and Op. 25 ends with this Ocean Étude. Both are in C minor, and both hands move wildly in each. We don't know if Chopin planned it, but it is an interesting link between the two sets.
The music stays mostly in dark C minor, but at the very end it changes to a C major chord. Ending a minor-key piece on a bright major chord is a centuries-old practice found in Renaissance and Baroque music. Here it feels like dawn breaking over a stormy sea.
With its huge broken chords sweeping across the keyboard, this piece is a lot like Op. 10 No. 1. The difference is that in Op. 10 No. 1 only the right hand does it, while here both hands make the waves. So the 24 études begin and end with big broken chords.
