Chopin finished this piano piece around 1835, and it was published in 1836. A "ballade" was first a poem or song that tells a story. Chopin turned the idea into piano music with no words. This is the first of his four ballades. From its quiet opening to its dramatic ending, it feels like listening to a story.
According to Schumann, Chopin said his ballades were inspired by poems of the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. But no one knows which poem, if any, is behind No. 1. Schumann also wrote that when he told Chopin it was his favorite, Chopin answered that it was his own favorite, too.
After a hesitant introduction, a lonely, waltz-like theme and a gentle second theme keep changing shape. The piece ends with a wild coda marked "presto con fuoco," meaning "very fast, with fire." It has been used in films and figure skating, and it remains a key work for pianists today.
This piano piece tells a story without words. It starts slowly and quietly. Then the music grows bigger and bigger. The ending is very fast and strong. A famous movie used this piece.

In the film "The Pianist," the hero plays this ballade for a German officer. But in the memoir of the real pianist, Władysław Szpilman, he says he played Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor at that moment.
Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu used this piece for his short program at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, where he won the gold medal. Many people in Japan came to know the music this way.
In a letter, Schumann wrote that he told Chopin this was his favorite of his works. After a long pause, Chopin said that he liked it best, too. It is rare to have such a report of a composer's own favorite.
The chord at the end of the introduction has a strange-sounding note in Chopin's own manuscript. Many printed editions changed it to a smoother note. Pianists still choose different versions, and people still discuss it.
