24の前奏曲より 第4番 ホ短調

ショパンの「24の前奏曲」の4曲目で、ゆっくりとした「ラルゴ」のテンポで弾かれるホ短調の曲です。楽譜は1ページほどの短さですが、右手のさびしげなメロディと、左手で静かにきざまれる和音が、深い悲しみを伝えます。前奏曲集の中でも特によく知られた1曲です。This is No. 4 of Chopin's 24 Preludes. It is in E minor and is played very slowly, at a "largo" tempo. The music fills only about one page, but the lonely melody in the right hand and the quiet chords in the left hand express deep sadness. It is one of the best-known pieces in the set.

右手のメロディは、ほとんど同じ高さの音を行ったり来たりするだけです。そのかわり左手の和音が、少しずつ半音ずつ下がりながら色を変えていきます。シンプルな材料で、これほど豊かな気持ちを表したことが、この曲のすごさです。前奏曲集は1838年から39年の冬、マジョルカ島で仕上げられました。The right-hand melody moves only a little, staying around the same few notes. Instead, the left-hand chords slowly change color, often slipping down by small steps. The magic of this piece is how much feeling it creates with such simple material. Chopin finished the Preludes on Majorca in the winter of 1838–1839.

1849年のショパンの葬儀では、オルガン奏者のルフェビュール＝ヴェリがこの曲をオルガンで演奏しました。その後もこの曲はジャズやポピュラー音楽の作曲家たちにも影響をあたえ、ボサノヴァの名曲のもとになったとも言われています。短い曲ながら、多くの人の心に残る1曲です。At Chopin's funeral in 1849, the organist Lefébure-Wély played this piece on the organ. Later it also influenced jazz and pop songwriters, and it is said to have inspired a famous bossa nova song. Though it is short, it stays in many people's hearts.
