The Story

This mazurka is thought to have been written around 1846, in Chopin's last years. In A minor, it sings a slightly lonely melody, as if remembering old days. A brighter major-key section comes in the middle, and then the lonely song returns. It is short but touching.

Around this time, Chopin's health was getting worse, and his long relationship with George Sand was coming to an end. He never published this piece in his lifetime. It is said that before his death he wished his unpublished manuscripts to be destroyed.

However, his friend Julian Fontana, with the family's consent, selected a number of unpublished piano pieces and published them in 1855. This piece was one of them and appeared as Opus 67. If the manuscripts had been destroyed, we might never have heard this beautiful mazurka. Thanks to Fontana, many fine pieces survived.

This is a lonely and beautiful Polish dance. Chopin wrote it near the end of his life. He did not publish it. After he died, his friend published it. Now we can enjoy it!

It is said that before his death Chopin wished his unpublished manuscripts to be destroyed. As a perfectionist, he may not have wanted works he was not satisfied with to be made public.

Julian Fontana, a friend from his Warsaw days, often helped Chopin by making clean copies of his music. After Chopin's death, with the family's consent, he selected unpublished piano pieces and published them in 1855 as Opus 66 to 73.

The number Opus 67 was not given by Chopin himself. It was added when the piece was published after his death. So the order of the opus numbers does not match the order in which the works were written.

Around 1846, Chopin's illness was getting worse, and the next year his relationship with George Sand ended. Many people feel that the lonely melody of this piece reflects his heart in those hard times.
