This is the last of Chopin's Twelve Études, Op. 10. The right hand pounds out strong chords and melody, while the left hand races up and down like a storm. It is an exercise for the left hand, but it is also dramatic music full of anger and sorrow. This short piece holds very strong feelings.
In 1830, the 20-year-old Chopin left Poland. Soon after, the November Uprising against Russian rule broke out in Warsaw, and in September 1831 Russian troops took the city. Chopin heard the news in Stuttgart while traveling and wrote anguished, angry words in his diary. The étude is said to have grown out of those feelings.
The Op. 10 Études were published in 1833 and dedicated to Chopin's friend, the pianist Franz Liszt. The nickname 'Revolutionary' was not Chopin's own. Chopin never returned to his homeland. Still, his love for Poland lived on in his music all his life.
This piano piece is fast and angry. The left hand moves very fast, like a storm. Chopin was away from Poland. He heard sad news about his country. People say he wrote this music with those feelings.

In 1831, when Chopin heard that Russian troops had taken Warsaw, he poured out his worry for family and friends in a diary he kept in Stuttgart. There is no direct proof that he wrote this étude at that moment, but many believe the same feelings run through it.
In most piano music, the right hand with the melody gets the attention. But in this étude, it is the left hand that never stops moving. Playing its rushing notes evenly and loudly is very hard, and it tests a pianist's left hand.
Chopin dedicated the twelve Op. 10 Études to 'my friend Franz Liszt'. Liszt played them brilliantly, and Chopin wrote in a letter that he was carried away by hearing Liszt play his études.
After leaving Warsaw in 1830, Chopin lived in Paris and never returned to Poland. Yet he kept writing Polish dances, such as mazurkas and polonaises, putting his love for his homeland into music.
