この曲は、ショパンの「24の前奏曲」の16番目の曲です。楽譜には「プレスト・コン・フオーコ（とても速く、火のように）」と書かれています。24曲の中でもとくにむずかしい曲のひとつと言われ、ピアニストの腕前が試される1曲です。聴いていると、思わず息をつめてしまうほどの迫力です。This is the 16th piece in Chopin's 24 Preludes. The score says Presto con fuoco, which means very fast and with fire. It is often called one of the hardest pieces in the set, and it really tests a pianist's skill. Its power can make you hold your breath.

曲は、強い和音が6回打ち鳴らされて始まります。そのあと右手が、とぎれることなく高速で鍵盤をかけめぐり、左手は大きくはねるリズムで支えます。「前奏曲」はもともと何かの前に弾く短い曲のことですが、ショパンはそれだけで完成した小さな作品にしました。It begins with six loud chords. Then the right hand races over the keys without a break, while the left hand jumps in a strong, bouncing rhythm. A prelude was once a short piece played before something else, but Chopin made each one a small, complete work of its own.

前奏曲集は1839年に出版されました。ショパンと同じ年に生まれたシューマンは、この曲集を「スケッチ」「廃墟」「ワシの羽根」などのことばで評しました。短い曲がばらばらに見えるほど自由だったからです。いまこの第16番は、演奏会で拍手をよぶ見せ場としてよく弾かれています。The Preludes were published in 1839. Schumann, born in the same year as Chopin, described them with words like sketches, ruins and eagle feathers, because the short pieces seemed so free and wild. Today No. 16 is often played as a thrilling showpiece in concerts.

すぐ前の第15番は、静かな雨の音のような「雨だれ」。しかも2曲は仲間の調どうしです。長くおだやかな曲のあとに、この短くはげしい曲がとつぜん始まるので、続けて聴くと思わず飛びあがりそうになります。

The piece just before it is No. 15, the calm Raindrop prelude, and the two are in related keys. After that long, peaceful piece, this short and furious one bursts in. If you hear them together, you may almost jump out of your seat.

同じ「24の前奏曲」の第7番は、日本では胃腸薬・太田胃散のCMでおなじみの、わずか16小節の小さな曲です。のんびりした第7番と、火をふく第16番。同じ曲集とは思えないほど、性格がちがいます。

No. 7 from the same set is a tiny piece only 16 bars long. In Japan it is famous from TV ads for Ota Isan, a stomach medicine. The relaxed No. 7 and the fiery No. 16 are so different that they hardly seem to come from the same set.

シューマンは前奏曲集について、「スケッチ、練習曲の書きはじめ、いわば廃墟、ワシの羽根がばらばらにまざりあったもの」という意味のことを書きました。けなしたようにも聞こえますが、そのあとで、どの曲にもショパンらしさがあるとほめています。

Schumann wrote that the Preludes were like sketches, the beginnings of studies, ruins, or eagle feathers all mixed together. It may sound like criticism, but he went on to say that every piece clearly showed Chopin's hand.

右手の速さが目立ちますが、じつは左手も大いそがし。低い音と高い音のあいだを大きく跳びながら、強いアクセントでリズムを打ちこみます。両手がちがうむずかしさをかかえているのが、この曲がむずかしいと言われる理由のひとつです。

The fast right hand stands out, but the left hand is very busy too. It jumps between low and high notes and hammers out strong accents. Both hands face different challenges, which is one reason the piece is so hard.
