The Story

This is the eighth piece in Chopin's 12 Études, Op. 10. It is in bright F major. The right hand moves up and down the keyboard in quick little notes without a rest. It sounds like sunlight sparkling on water. It is like bright morning exercise for the fingers.

The goal is to move the right hand widely but lightly. Because it covers a large area very fast, a relaxed wrist and arm are important. Meanwhile, the melody is mostly in the left hand, singing in the lower notes. The two hands have clearly different jobs.

The 12 pieces of Op. 10 were published in 1833 and dedicated to Franz Liszt. No. 8 in F major is followed by No. 9 in F minor, which is built around the same note F, creating a striking bright-and-dark contrast. It is still a popular étude in concerts and music school exams.

This piano piece is bright and happy. The right hand runs up and down very fast. It sounds like sunshine on water. But the song is in the left hand! The right hand is like sparkles around it.

Surprising Facts

The sparkling right hand catches your ear, but much of the melody is in the left hand. The pianist must move the right hand very fast while making the left-hand song clear. When you listen, try focusing on the lower notes.

No. 8 is in F major, and No. 9 right after it is in F minor. Both center on the note F, but the moods are opposite. Heard side by side, the two pieces make a striking bright-and-dark contrast.

It is said that Chopin taught his students scales starting with keys like B major, not easy C major. He thought keys with more black keys fit the natural shape of the hand. This idea of a relaxed hand is alive in this étude too.

The Op. 10 pieces were written over several years, from Chopin's late teens in Warsaw to his early years in Paris. While he was still only about 20, he turned finger exercises into works beautiful enough for the concert hall.
