This is the first piece in Op. 27, a set of two nocturnes. The second is the famous Nocturne in D-flat major, which forms a bright contrast with this C-sharp minor piece. It begins slowly, marked Larghetto. The left hand plays wide broken chords from low to high, and the right hand sings a dark, heavy melody above them.
The middle part is marked più mosso, faster than before, and the time changes from four beats to three. The left hand moves in waves of three notes, the music grows stronger and stronger, and it reaches a great climax in A-flat major. The American critic James Huneker called this piece a masterpiece and praised its dark melody over the uneasy left hand.
After the dark song returns, the music slows to Adagio and ends quietly with a bright major sound. Huneker described this ending as sunshine after a surprising climax. Op. 27 was published in 1836 and 1837 and dedicated to Countess Apponyi, the wife of the Austrian ambassador. Later, the piece was also used for ballet.
This nocturne starts very dark. The left hand plays low and wide, like the deep sea. In the middle, the music gets fast and strong. At the end, it becomes bright and calm, like the sun after rain.

In 1970, the American choreographer Jerome Robbins made a ballet called In the Night using Chopin's nocturnes. This piece was used for its first duet. Although it was not written for dancing, it fits perfectly with a story of lovers at night.
The second piece of Op. 27, the Nocturne in D-flat major, is one of Chopin's most loved nocturnes. This No. 7 is in dark C-sharp minor, and No. 8 is in bright D-flat major. In fact, C-sharp and D-flat are played on the same key of the piano. But one piece is in minor and the other in major, so their scales and moods are very different.
In the first part, the left hand keeps playing broken chords that spread widely from low to high. This creates a feeling of a deep sea or the darkness of night. The stretch is hard for small hands, and some say you need more practice for the left hand than for the melody.
This piece begins in C-sharp minor, but it ends with a bright major sound. The critic Huneker described this ending as sunshine after a surprising climax. It is a reassuring ending, like morning coming after a long night.
