The Story

Ballade No. 3 is the third of Chopin's four ballades. The other three end sadly in minor keys, but this one begins in bright A-flat major and ends there, grand and bright. Riding on a swaying rhythm in six beats, it tells a graceful, open-hearted story. It leaves you with a bright feeling.

It opens with a phrase that sounds like a question, followed by one that sounds like an answer. Then a light, bouncing second theme appears and keeps changing its shape. In the second half, the music grows larger, and the first theme returns with great power in a shining climax.

The piece was published in 1841 and dedicated to Mademoiselle Pauline de Noailles. Some people say it is based on Mickiewicz's poem about a lake spirit, but Chopin himself wrote nothing about it. It is still loved as the friendliest of the four ballades.

Of the four ballades, No. 1 ends in G minor, No. 2 in A minor and No. 4 in F minor. Only No. 3 ends in a bright major key. Among these mostly tragic stories, it is the one that lets you smile.

Some say the piece is based on Mickiewicz's poem Świtezianka, a tale of a young man who swears eternal love to a girl by a lake. But Chopin left no notes about it, so this is only a later guess.

Chopin spent the summer of 1839 and the summers from 1841 to 1846 at George Sand's country house in Nohant, France, and wrote many great works there. This piece was finished around the summer of 1841 and sent to friends in Paris.

This Ballade was not the only work published in 1841. The Polonaise Op. 44 and the Prelude Op. 45 also came out around the same time. It belongs to one of Chopin's richest periods of composing.
