The Story

This is the third of the three waltzes in Chopin's Op. 34. It is a very fast and lively waltz in F major, and the right hand quickly plays spinning groups of small notes. Along the way, there are figures with short grace notes that seem to jump. Because of these light movements, it came to be called the Cat Waltz.

The name Cat Waltz is linked to a story that Chopin got the idea for this piece after hearing his cat run across the piano keys. However, this is thought to be a legend made up later. Chopin himself did not give the piece such a title, and there is no record that supports the cat story.

This waltz was written in 1838 and published the same year as the third piece of Op. 34. It was dedicated to a young lady named Mademoiselle A. d'Eichthal. It is fairly short, and because of its bursting brightness, it is also played at the end of concerts or as an encore. Its playful nickname, Cat Waltz, invites listeners to imagine the notes jumping about.

This waltz is very fast and happy. The notes jump and run like a cat. Some people say Chopin's cat ran on the piano. But this story is probably not true. Still, the name "Cat Waltz" is fun!

A popular story says Chopin's cat ran across the keyboard and inspired this piece. But there is no reliable record to support it, and the story is thought to be a later legend. The name probably came from the jumping sound of the music.

A sonata by the 18th-century composer Domenico Scarlatti is also nicknamed the Cat's Fugue. It too has a legend that it came from the sound of a cat walking on the keyboard. Stories of cats and keyboards are a popular kind of legend about composers.

The three pieces of Op. 34 were written in different years: 1835, 1831, and 1838. Among them, only this No. 4 was published in the same year it was written, 1838. The newest piece brightly closes the set.

This piece often has figures with a short grace note just before the main note. When these grace notes are played lightly, they sound like a small animal jumping. This playful sound fits the nickname Cat perfectly.
