Introduction

A furry hare, a rhinoceros that seems to wear armor, fluffy puppies and a tiger peeking from the jungle. Many animals live in masterpieces. Painters watched animals for hours, and sometimes they even drew animals they had never seen, using only descriptions. Their sharp eyes and imagination are amazing.

A picture scroll where rabbits and frogs wrestle, often called Japan's oldest manga; a noble horse painted life-size; a tiny bird on a chain. Animal paintings are full of the painters' kindness, humor and wonder at living things. Let's visit the zoo inside the paintings!

Highlights

He drew a rhino he never saw!?

In 1515, an Indian rhinoceros was brought to Lisbon, Portugal. Dürer never saw it. He made his woodcut from a letter and a sketch sent to him. The armor-like skin and the small horn on its back were imagined. Even so, his picture was copied as the 'true' rhino for more than 200 years.

2

Rabbits and frogs, sumo wrestling

In the Chōjū-giga scrolls kept at Kōzan-ji temple in Kyoto, rabbits, frogs and monkeys play and wrestle like humans. Because of their lively lines, they are often called Japan's oldest manga.

3

A life-size horse with no background

Stubbs's Whistlejacket shows a racehorse rearing up, almost life-size, on a canvas about three meters tall. There is no background at all, so the horse's muscles and shining coat stand out even more.

4

A little bird on a chain

Fabritius's The Goldfinch shows a small bird on a perch, tied by a thin chain. In 1654, the year he painted it, the artist was killed in a huge gunpowder explosion in Delft.

5

A jungle from a botanical garden

Rousseau is believed never to have left France. He painted his tiger jungles by studying plants and animals at the greenhouses and zoo of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, and by using his imagination. His tiger seems startled by something in a storm.
