The boy attacked by a shark later became Lord Mayor of London. A true story!
In 1749, a 14-year-old sailor named Brook Watson was swimming in Havana harbour, Cuba, when a shark attacked him. His shipmates are trying hard to save him from a small boat. The painting shows the moment just before he was rescued from the third attack. It was painted by the American-born artist John Singleton Copley.
After a successful career as a portrait painter in Boston, Copley moved to London. This was his first large story painting there. It was shown at the Royal Academy in 1778 and became a hit. It was new to paint an ordinary young man in danger, not a king or a hero, on such a large, grand canvas.
Watson lost his right leg below the knee, but he later became a successful merchant. In 1796, he became Lord Mayor of London. When he died in 1807, he left the painting to a school called Christ's Hospital. The school sold it to the National Gallery of Art in 1963, but it still keeps a copy.
A boy is in the sea. A big shark is coming. Men in a boat try to help him. This really happened in 1749. The boy lived, and later he became the Lord Mayor of London!
Copley never visited Havana and probably never saw a shark attack. He used prints and book pictures, and he added a real landmark in the background: Morro Castle.
This shark has lips and large, strange nostrils. Real sharks don't have these features. Some people say its face looks more like a tiger's. It suggests that Copley did not know real sharks well.
In the early sketches, the man throwing the rope was a white man with long hair. In the final painting, Copley made him a Black sailor. This was an unusual choice at the time, and scholars still discuss it.
In his will, Watson left the painting to a school, hoping it would be 'a most useful lesson to youth'. The school received it in 1819 and hung it in its great hall. For many years, students lived and studied with this picture.

The boy's golden hair spreads in the water as he reaches up. His injured right leg is under the waves, so the wound is not shown.
The shark
The shark comes closer with its mouth open. But look closely: its lips and nose are not like a real shark's.

Standing at the front of the boat, a man is about to strike the shark with a harpoon. His pose comes from an ancient statue, the Borghese Gladiator.
