イギリスの植民地だったころのボストンに生まれ、ほぼ独学で、アメリカ一の肖像画家になりました。銀細工師ポール・リヴィアの肖像は今も有名です。アメリカ独立戦争が始まる直前の1774年にヨーロッパへ渡り、ロンドンに住みつきました。そこで実際の事件を劇的に描いた『ワトソンと鮫』を発表して評判になりました。
Copley was born in Boston when it was still a British colony. Mostly self-taught, he became the best portrait painter in America. His portrait of the silversmith Paul Revere is still famous. In 1774, just before the American Revolution began, he sailed to Europe and settled in London. There, his dramatic painting of a real event, Watson and the Shark, made him well known.
