Guernica's long road home

In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the Basque town of Guernica was bombed from the air. Picasso turned the tragedy into a giant painting for the Spanish Pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. A famous story says a German officer asked him, "Did you do this?" and Picasso replied, "No, you did." He refused to let the painting go to Spain until democracy returned, so it stayed in New York for decades and only reached Spain in 1981.

Were the clocks inspired by cheese?

Dalí said that one evening, while staring at a runny Camembert cheese after dinner, he came up with the idea of "soft watches." Escaping west just before the Berlin Wall

Richter was born in Dresden, in East Germany, grew up mainly in small towns in the east, and later studied art in Dresden. Wanting to paint freely, he moved to West Germany in 1961, a few months before the Berlin Wall was built, and studied again at the art academy in Düsseldorf. There he created his "photo-paintings" — pictures copied from photographs and then blurred — and became famous worldwide.

A poster genius becomes a painter

Born in Nishiwaki, Hyogo, Yokoo became famous in the 1960s for posters that mixed bold colors and striking images. His work was so admired that he had a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1972. Then, in the early 1980s, he set aside the design style he had mastered and became a painter. For more than 40 years since, he has painted self-portraits, landscapes and much more.
