Paul Cézanne 1839–1906・France

The 'father of modern art' who amazed Paris with apples.

Cézanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in southern France, the son of a banker. In Paris he joined the Impressionists, but later he went back home. There he painted apples, oranges and Mont Sainte-Victoire again and again. He built forms out of solid patches of color. This led to Cubism and artists like Picasso, so he is called the 'father of modern art.'

“Treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone, everything brought into proper perspective.”

— Paul Cézanne, Letter to the painter Émile Bernard, 15 April 1904(画家エミール・ベルナールへの手紙(1904年4月15日))
