セザンヌがふるさと南フランスのエクス＝アン＝プロヴァンスで描いた、トランプをする二人の農夫の絵です。まん中のびんをはさんで、パイプをくわえた男と、帽子をかぶった男が向かい合い、ひと言もしゃべらずにカードを見つめています。パリのオルセー美術館にある、シリーズでいちばん小さく、いちばん簡素な一枚です。

Cézanne painted two farm workers playing cards in his hometown, Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France. A man with a pipe and a man in a hat face each other across a bottle. They stare at their cards without saying a word. This version in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is the smallest and simplest of the series.

セザンヌは1890年代前半、このテーマで5枚の油絵を描きました。大きな2枚には4〜5人の人物がいますが、ほかの3枚は二人だけです。モデルは、セザンヌ家の農園で働く人びとだったと考えられています。にぎやかなはずのトランプの場面を、セザンヌはまるで静物画のように、静かでがっしりした形で組み立てています。

In the early 1890s, Cézanne made five oil paintings of card players. Two large ones show four or five people, and the other three show only two men. His models are thought to have been workers from his family's farm. He turned a lively card game into something quiet and solid, almost like a still life.

二人の男は左右対称に見えて、服の色、帽子の形、体の傾きが少しずつちがいます。こうした形の組み立て方は、のちのピカソやブラックたちに大きな影響をあたえました。同じテーマの別の1枚は2011年にカタールの王族が買い、その値段は2億5000万ドル以上と報じられて世界をおどろかせました。

The two men look almost like mirror images, but their clothes, hats and poses are a little different. This way of building forms had a big influence on later artists such as Picasso and Braque. In 2011, the royal family of Qatar bought another version, reportedly for more than 250 million dollars.
