Will the fruit slide off? Cézanne's carefully built still life.
In front of a curtain with a leaf pattern, there are a flowered pitcher and plates of apples and other fruit. A white cloth spreads across the table. The French painter Paul Cézanne made this picture in the 1890s. It is now in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Cézanne was known for carefully arranging fruit and cloth when he painted still lifes. In this picture, the plates seem to be seen from a little above, while the pitcher is seen almost from the side. The viewpoint does not seem fixed, so the things on the table appear to slide toward us. This way of showing space strongly influenced the later Cubism of Picasso and Braque.
In 1907, the great Russian collector Ivan Morozov bought this painting from the Paris dealer Ambroise Vollard. After the Russian Revolution, it went to a state museum. In 1948, the Museum of Modern Western Art in Moscow was closed, and its collection was divided between Moscow and Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. This painting went to the Hermitage.
This is a still life. There is fruit on plates. A white pitcher has flowers on it. The plates look a little tilted. Cézanne painted things from different angles.

A young painter who visited Cézanne's studio remembered that Cézanne put small coins under the fruit to tilt them just right. It looks natural, but every piece was carefully planned.
In the stock books of the dealer Vollard, this painting was priced at 600 francs. In October 1907, the Russian collector Ivan Morozov bought it, and the painting traveled all the way to Moscow.
Cézanne loved this leaf-patterned cloth and used it in several still lifes. One of them, 'Curtain, Jug and Fruit Bowl,' sold at auction in 1999 for about 60.5 million dollars. At that time, it was the highest price ever paid for a still life.
The collector Morozov loved Cézanne. It is said that his Moscow mansion had a room lined with Cézanne's paintings, nearly 20 of them. This picture was part of that collection.
