This poster was made in 1892–93 for the Divan Japonais ("Japanese Couch"), a café-concert at 75 rue des Martyrs in Paris. In the middle, the dancer Jane Avril wears a black dress and a feathered hat. Next to her, in a top hat, is the writer and critic Édouard Dujardin.
The café is said to have had Japanese-style decorations, which shows how popular Japan was in Paris. Lautrec loved Japanese prints too. His bold cropping, large flat areas of black and strong outlines show the influence of ukiyo-e. The grainy gray areas were made by spattering ink with a brush. This technique is called crachis.
On the stage at the top left, the popular singer Yvette Guilbert is performing. Her head is outside the picture, but people knew her from her long black gloves. As a poster, it was printed many times, and copies are in museums around the world. This print belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Long black gloves were Yvette Guilbert's trademark. Lautrec left her head outside the picture on purpose. Just the gloves told people who she was.
In his 1887 novel We'll to the Woods No More, Dujardin wrote a character's thoughts as they flowed. James Joyce later named this book as an inspiration for his own style.
Lautrec loved Japan so much that he had a friend photograph him in Japanese-style costume with a fan. His round monogram is also said to imitate Japanese seals.
Jane Avril was Lautrec's good friend. In the same year, he made another poster, Jane Avril at the Jardin de Paris. It also shows the top of a double bass in a big, bold way.
