This is an advertising poster for the Moulin Rouge ("Red Windmill"), a dance hall that opened in Montmartre, Paris, in 1889. In the middle, the star dancer La Goulue kicks up her skirts. The gray, shadowy man in front is her dance partner, Valentin le Désossé, which means "Valentin the Boneless."
This was Lautrec's first poster, printed as a lithograph. The crowd is just black silhouettes, and the lamps are simple yellow circles. Lautrec learned flat colors and bold cropping from Japanese prints. The design is easy to read from far away. The poster was so big that it was printed on three sheets of paper.
About 3,000 copies are said to have been printed. They covered the walls of Paris, and Lautrec became famous almost overnight. The poster helped turn advertising into art. Today, museums around the world own copies. This one is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
This is a poster for a dance hall in Paris. The dancer's name is La Goulue. It means "the Glutton"! People say she drank from other people's glasses. This was Lautrec's first poster, and it made him famous.

Her real name was Louise Weber. She was called "the Glutton" because, it is said, she drank from customers' glasses as she passed their tables. Later she left the Moulin Rouge and ran her own show at fairs.
In 1895, La Goulue asked Lautrec to paint two huge panels for her fairground booth. Later, a dealer cut them into pieces and sold them. In 1929, the pieces were put back together. They are now in the Musée d'Orsay.
One of those booth panels shows the writer Oscar Wilde, the critic Félix Fénéon and Lautrec himself in the audience. Fénéon is also the man in Signac's famous portrait.
Lautrec was born into an old noble family in southern France. He is thought to have had an inherited bone disorder. After he broke both thigh bones as a teenager, his legs grew even less. As an adult, he was about 150 cm tall. Still, he spent his nights in Montmartre, drawing dancers and singers.
