In 1893, Toulouse-Lautrec made this poster for the Paris dancer Jane Avril. It announced her shows at the Jardin de Paris, a night-time entertainment spot on the Champs-Élysées. Jane is shown dancing with one leg kicked high. The print in this picture belongs to the National Library of France in Paris.
The poster is a lithograph. The artist drew on stone and printed one color at a time. Lautrec loved Japanese ukiyo-e prints, and he borrowed their bold outlines, flat colors and daring, cut-off views. The round 'HTL' mark at the bottom left works like the seal on a Japanese print. In the foreground, the head of a double bass rises from the orchestra pit, held by a player's hand.
In the 1890s, collecting posters as works of art became a craze in Paris. Jane and Lautrec were close friends, and he put her in many other posters and pictures. Today this poster is one of the symbols of the Belle Époque, the 'beautiful era' of Paris, and prints of it are kept in museums around the world.

As a teenager, Jane was treated for a nervous illness at the Salpêtrière hospital in Paris. In her memories, she says she discovered the joy of dancing at a ball held in the hospital. Her unusual, jerky dancing style later made her famous.
Jane's nickname was 'La Mélinite', the name of a powerful explosive at the time. Offstage she was quiet and elegant. But when she danced, she seemed to explode with energy, and her solo dancing thrilled the crowd.
The dark shape at the lower right is the neck and curled head of a double bass, with the player's hand. Putting a big instrument close to us makes the dancer seem far away on stage. Degas, an artist Lautrec admired, used a similar idea in his orchestra pictures.
In 1893, Lautrec also made a poster for a café-concert called the 'Divan Japonais', or 'Japanese Divan'. Jane appears there too, sitting in the audience in a black dress. Both the name of the place and the style of the poster show the Japan craze of the time.
