This painting shows the inside of the Moulin Rouge, a famous nightclub in Montmartre, Paris. Gentlemen and women talk around a table, and in the back a dancer fixes her hair. On the far right, a woman's face lit by green light is painted large, as if it is coming out of the picture. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into a noble family in the south of France. After he broke both his legs as a young teenager, they stopped growing, and he stayed short. He spent many nights at the Moulin Rouge and painted its dancers and guests full of life. The red-haired woman seen from behind at the table is thought to be the dancer Jane Avril, and the woman fixing her hair is the dancer La Goulue.
The railing cutting diagonally across the picture and the people cut off at the edges show the influence of Japanese prints. Toulouse-Lautrec also became famous for his posters, but he died in 1901 at only 36. This painting was given to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1928, and it still keeps the excitement of Paris nightlife alive.

An L-shaped strip, including the woman on the right, was once cut off the painting. It is said that the artist or his dealer cut it because her strange face made the picture hard to sell. By 1914, it had been joined back on.
The short man walking beside a tall man in the back is Toulouse-Lautrec himself. The tall man is his cousin, the doctor Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran. The two often went out together in Paris at night.
The woman on the right is May Milton, an English performer. An early book called her 'Mlle Nelly C.,' but today she is identified as May Milton, and the Art Institute of Chicago names her too.
The Moulin Rouge opened in 1889. Its sign is a red windmill on the roof, and 'Moulin Rouge' means 'red windmill' in French. More than 130 years later, it is still open in Paris.
