Toulouse-Lautrec was born into a noble family in Albi, southern France. He is thought to have had weak bones from birth. As a teenager, he broke both thigh bones in two separate accidents, and after that his legs hardly grew. He lived in Montmartre, Paris, and painted the dancers, singers and guests of cabarets like the Moulin Rouge. His posters, with bold shapes and flat colors learned from Japanese prints, became the talk of the city. He died at 36.
