The table doesn't line up!? Cézanne bent the rules on purpose.
Cézanne painted this still life around 1893. Apples are about to roll out of a tilted basket. There is a tall bottle, a plate of long biscuits and a crumpled white cloth. They are all everyday things, but if you look closely, many things seem strange. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
The front edge of the table is at different heights on the left and right of the cloth. The bottle leans a little to the left, and the plate of biscuits looks as if we see it from above. Cézanne did not paint from just one spot. He combined shapes seen from several points of view. This makes the objects feel heavier and more real.
This idea of many points of view was passed on to Picasso and Braque and their Cubism in the 20th century. Cézanne is said to have declared, 'I want to astonish Paris with an apple.' Still lifes like this one helped later artists see painting in a new way. For Cézanne, still life was a laboratory for a new kind of art.
This picture shows apples, a basket and a bottle. Look at the table. The left side and the right side do not match! Cézanne did this on purpose. He wanted to show things from different places.
The front edge of the table is not in the same place on each side of the white cloth. Experts think this was not a mistake. Cézanne did it on purpose to move our eyes and create tension.
The art dealer Ambroise Vollard remembered posing for his portrait more than 100 times. When he moved even a little, Cézanne scolded him: 'Sit like an apple! Does an apple move?'
Cézanne worked on each still life for a long time. It is said that he preferred apples, which last longer than flowers. He reportedly even used artificial flowers sometimes.
There is a signature, 'P. Cezanne', at the lower left. Cézanne often did not sign his works, so a signed painting is unusual. Look for it in the lower left corner, below the table.
