Is the table tilting? Cézanne's revolution, made with apples.
Paul Cézanne painted this still life around 1899, late in his life. On a table with a crumpled white cloth, there is a fruit stand, a plate of apples and oranges, and a flowered jug. Behind them, heavy patterned fabric hangs down.
Look closely and you will see strange things. We see the fruit stand from the side, but the plate from above. The table tilts toward us, and the fruit looks ready to roll off. Cézanne did not stick to one point of view. He combined views from different angles to show the weight of things and a balanced picture.
This way of breaking up and rebuilding what we see had a huge influence on Picasso and Cubism. The painting once belonged to the critic Gustave Geffroy. Then the collector Isaac de Camondo bought it and left it to France. Today it is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Here are apples and oranges on a table. Look at the table. It tilts, and the fruit may roll off! Cézanne painted things from different sides in one picture. The art dealer Vollard sat for a portrait over 100 times. Cézanne told him, "Sit still like an apple!"
The art dealer Ambroise Vollard wrote that he sat for his portrait more than 100 times. If he moved, Cézanne reportedly scolded him: "Does an apple move?" In the end, the portrait was left unfinished.
This flowered jug and patterned cloth appear in several other still lifes by Cézanne. He kept painting his favorite studio props, changing how he arranged them.
Picasso and Matisse are said to have called Cézanne "the father of us all." Cubism grew out of his way of combining several viewpoints. Cézanne himself wrote that nature should be treated through the cylinder, the sphere and the cone.
For years, Cézanne's paintings were almost always rejected by the official Salon. His first big solo show came in 1895, when he was in his mid-fifties. It was organized by Vollard, the dealer who later had to sit "like an apple."
