南フランスのエクス＝アン＝プロヴァンスの東にそびえる、サント＝ヴィクトワール山を描いた絵です。手前には石の壁、左には高い松の木。そのむこうにアルク川の谷が広がり、右には鉄道の高架橋、いちばん奥に白っぽい岩の山が見えます。1890年ごろの作品で、パリのオルセー美術館にあります。

This painting shows Mont Sainte-Victoire, a mountain east of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. In front, there is a stone wall, and on the left, a tall pine tree. Beyond them, the Arc River valley spreads out, with a railway bridge on the right and the pale rocky mountain at the back. It was painted around 1890 and is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

セザンヌは、目に見えるものを、しっかりした単純な形で組み立てようとしました。畑や家や木は、小さな色の面を積み重ねるように描かれています。近くの松も遠くの山も同じくらいはっきり描き、遠近感よりも画面全体のまとまりを大切にしました。この方法は、のちのキュビスムに大きな影響をあたえました。

Cézanne tried to build what he saw out of solid, simple shapes. The fields, houses and trees are made of small patches of colour placed side by side. He painted the near pine and the far mountain almost equally clearly, caring more about the whole picture than about depth. This approach strongly influenced the later development of Cubism.

セザンヌは生涯にこの山を、油絵と水彩あわせておよそ80回描きました。この絵はコレクターのオーギュスト・ペルランが持っていたもので、1969年にその孫娘からフランスの国に贈られました。今ではサント＝ヴィクトワール山は「セザンヌの山」として世界中に知られています。

In his life, Cézanne painted this mountain about 80 times in oil and watercolour. This picture once belonged to the collector Auguste Pellerin, and his granddaughter gave it to the French state in 1969. Today, Mont Sainte-Victoire is known around the world as 'Cézanne's mountain'.
